Department of Wisdom and Learning

Wisdom is a virtue but often confused with knowledge by most people. Wisdom is traditionally acquired through experience and observation and does not have much to do with empirical forms of knowledge systems. A person with wisdom is able to easily relate, understand and sensibly handle complexities within a given environment. Knowledge on the other hand is a learning solution or training received in a focused skill towards a definite goal. One needs wisdom to apply formal systems of knowledge. The ancient Jewish saying goes, ‘Be shrewd as serpents and harmless as doves’ and Tiruvalluvar’s Tamil lines ‘Agara mudhala yezhuthelam aadhi bagavan mudhatre ulagu and ‘Anbillaar yelaam thamakuriyar, anbudaiyaar yendrum uriyar pirarku’ and so on. Wisdom contains truths embedded in its thought patterns whereas knowledge systems are built up on empirical facts. In a constantly changing world we need to gain wisdom and learning to maximize and create joy, give joy, get joy and rejoice to establish heaven on earth.
